If you have gold fever or would just like to try your hand at prospecting, the Oroville area is a good place to begin. Gold is found almost daily along the Feather River, and gold panning can be a family outing full of fun and adventure.
One location that seems to consistently produce "color" is the Feather River just above the upper Thermalito Bridge. Many of the nearby streams are also good prospects. Some local prospectors believe that the Milsap Bar campground area, near the Middle Fork of the Feather River about a 30-mile drive from Brush Creek, is also a good spot. Others believe that French Creek area, found by taking Oro-Quincy Highway to Mountain House and then driving Four Mile Ridge Road and following signs, is the best place to begin.
No matter where you choose, the best plan for beginners is to watch experienced panners and study their techniques. You may want to check with the Lake Oroville Visitor's Center (530-538-2219) to learn the dates of their gold panning demonstrations.
